Experienced Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA) Engineer

Purpose of Role:

Working as part of the Operations team, we require an experienced SQA Engineer to take a key role in selecting and developing our supply chain and internal processes at this pivotal time for the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Engineering (Design and Manufacturing Engineers) team to define process parameters and criteria to ensure supplier process capability is effective to meet product and process requirements.

The right candidate will work as part of a dedicated Hardware team, assuming overall responsibility for the ongoing development, design proving, industrialisation and volume manufacturing launch of the existing power conversion and control solutions. Following volume launch of the initial product offering, the role is expected to support Advanced Engineering team in the design, development and proving of the next generation products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assume design responsibility for existing power conversion and control cards, through a structured program of knowledge transfer from the existing engineer, who is in turn transitioning into an Advanced Engineering role.
  • Lead investigation and resolution of any failures seen on the power electronics modules during the development and test program.
  • Lead the development of the detailed test specifications and supporting test rigs to support first off builds of the power electronics at our Contract Electronics Manufacturing (CEM) partner. Subsequently support the definition, development and validation of the In-Circuit Test (ICT) fixtures and test procedures preparation for full volume production.
  • Support our CEM partner with first off builds, board bring up, and functional tests of the power conversion and control boards.
  • Support the test team in the design and development of a test facility which provides the ability to test the electronic power conversion stages at the full designed power of 12kW.
  • Define and execute a suite of design proving tests for each of the power conversion and control boards.
  • Working closely with our CEM, to conduct Design For Manufacture (DFM), and Design For Test (DFT) reviews, then to include the necessary modifications to schematics and PCB layouts so as to achieve a design which is suitable for high volume manufacture.
  • Work closely with the CEM in the identification and/or review and approval of alternative components for the released designs.
  • As a member of the electronics hardware design team, support first off build and integration testing of the power electronics assembly, then first off system builds, commissioning, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), and Customer Acceptance Test (CAT).
  • Define and drive a test program to prove the reliability of the power conversion and control modules.
  • Support Advanced Engineering activity by contributing your knowledge and experience of power electronics design & development to review, selection and development of future product concepts.
  • Lead detailed design and industrialisation of the next generation power conversion and control products, working from proven product concepts supplied by the Advanced Engineering team.
  • Work with minimum supervision and maximum responsibility, and to operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in electrical & electronic engineering, with subsequent specialism in power electronics.
  • Significant (> 10 years) experience in design and development of power electronics designs, for power control and/or power conversion applications.-

  • To develop and manage the electrical and electronic systems design validation programme and to lead a team in the successful execution of the agreed plans.
  • To lead the investigation and resolution of issues reported from electronic integration and/or product level tests, to include operation of the Failure Reporting and Corrective Action Systems (FRaCAS).
  • To work with minimum supervision and maximum responsibility.
  • To operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Key Experience:

  • Degree in electrical & electronic engineering.
  • At least five years’ experience working in electrical system design, development and testing, having held lead role for at least two years, preferably gained within an automotive engineering environment.
  • Experienced in the design, 3D modelling and drafting of wiring harnesses and cable assemblies. Knowledge of Solidworks electrical systems design toolset would be a benefit.
  • Good working knowledge of mechanical and thermal design principles in relation to integration of electronic modules within mechanical systems.
  • Able to lead system level FMEA design analysis for a large and complex electrical / electronic system.
  • Having breadth and depth of experience in defining and leading integration test programs to validate correct functionality and performance of the system against the electronic system requirements.
  • Skilled and experienced in fault finding on large, complex electrical and electronic system.
  • Preferably, but not essentially, being trained and externally accredited for testing of high voltage (400V DC), high current (>80A) and high power (up to 12kW) electrical / electronic systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support in plant manufacturing and production activities.
  • Generation of control plans and associated methodologies.
  • FMEA support.
  • Inspection and measurement equipment identification and validation (gauge R&R)s.
  • Facilitate and promote use of appropriate problem solving techniques for effective root cause analysis and successful corrective action.
  • Implementing statistical methodologies to establish key process capabilities and drive improvement activities to ensure process capability.
  • Participate in the Advanced Product Quality Planning activities to determine appropriate use of existing and new measurement systems during new tool or process design and start-up.
  • Coordinate with other departments to resolve customer concerns.

Key Experience:

  • Substantial experience in a volume manufacturing environment, preferably Automotive or Aerospace.
  • Experience of working in Quality Assurance and continuous improvement methodology approach.
  • Lean skills.

The Product Support Engineer will prioritise, resource and deliver an efficient response to all product support requests, which may originate either from customers, internal service teams, our manufacturing teams, electronics manufacturing partners or internal test and development teams.

Initially, this will be the only dedicated support engineer role within the Electronics Hardware team, it is expected that we may need to increase the level of support resources longer-term, giving this role the potential to develop into a leadership position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To define and implement a support request tracking system, to record, and prioritise all support requests, working closely with the Electronics Hardware Lead to allocate the work appropriately, and manage the swift, effective follow up and close out on all assigned actions.
  • To perform the component engineering function for the department, working closely with the CEM to identify and validate alternative components, as well as managing a timely response to all electronic component obsolescence warnings such that continuity of supply is unaffected.
  • To be responsible for the creation of all product support documentation in relation to the electronics hardware within the product, including, but not limited to, construction of training materials for the sales and support teams, providing content for sales presentations, brochures, product manuals, etc.
  • To prepare and deliver training to sales and support teams, manufacturing teams, test and development teams to improve familiarisation with the design, construction and operation of the electronics within the MGT products.
  • To be the first point of contact within the electronics hardware team to field all requests for information, answer any questions on the design and/or operation of the electronics hardware.
  • To co-ordinate engineers in investigation and repairs for any reported defective products, supported primarily by the integration and test engineer, with secondary support from design engineering team in the event that the presence of a design defect in one of more electronic modules is suspected.
  • To operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will already have experience in working within an electronic product support function. Consideration would also be given to candidates with a purely electronics technician background, or new graduates in electronics design related subjects. Nb. Candidates having product support experience but not having electronics product knowledge would not be considered suitable and should not apply.
  • Able to read and understand wiring diagrams, and to read and understand electronic schematics.
  • Experience in working within a component engineering function, having a good understanding of electronic component functions and key parameters, able to calculate the operating point of a component within an electronic circuit, and to select and/or validate potential alternative components.
  • Proven ability to organise, structure and deliver on a large, varied and rapidly changing set of tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, able to understand and manage stakeholder expectations, consistently delivering on commitments.
  • Ability to prepare clearly written, easy to understand technical content for product manuals, sales materials, presentations, etc.
  • Experience of preparing and successfully delivering technical training on electronics products, to audiences of technical and non-technical backgrounds would be preferable.
  • Experience to assemble and co-ordinate small groups of engineers in the investigation and resolution of problems involving large electrical and electronic systems.

The PCB & Mechanical Lead Engineer will lead all PCB layout activities conducted in the development of the Bladon Jets products. Defining the processes and standards to be followed, managing the central component database, selecting suitably competent PCB layout resources, guiding, reviewing and approving all PCB layout activities.

The right candidate will guide, direct, and approve the work of the mechanical design teams in creation of the electronics packaging designs, handling all aspects of release and subsequent management of the electronic design data within the company’s EPDM system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To define and apply the procedures and standards to all PCB design activities, to ensure all released designs are of high quality and optimised for high volume manufacturing process.
  • To establish and manage a centralised component library, to be used across all Bladon Jets PCB designs, and to migrate all existing designs to that library to introduce proper control over the quality and correctness of all utilised component symbols and geometries and AML.
  • To manage the recruitment of all PCB resources (contract or permanent) who will work on the Bladon Jets project, ensuring adequate levels of technical competence and experience.
  • To guide, direct, review and approve all component part creation, schematic capture, BOM generation and PCB layout activities.
  • To be the primary interface to the mechanical design team, guiding, directing, reviewing and approving all PCB mounting arrangements, mechanical packaging and thermal management aspects.
  • To manage formal release via the ECO process and subsequent control of all electronic design artefacts within company EPDM systems, including management of change via the ECR process.
  • To work with minimum supervision and maximum responsibility.
  • To operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • To work with Engineering to resolve problems as they occur.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or HNC/HND plus significant relevant on-job experience.
  • Significant (> 10 years) experience in design and development of printed circuit boards, encompassing high current/high power, as well as small signal and microprocessor based board designs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the manufacturing processes for construction of various types of PCB blank, and how this is controlled and driven from the PCB design data.
  • Must have detailed working knowledge of the PCB assembly process in a high volume quality driven manufacturing environment, with strong knowledge of the key principles of design for manufacture and design for test, and able to apply these effectively to guide and control of PCB design activities.
  • Must have significant experience in use of Altium Schematic Capture & PCB layout tools.
  • Preferably, but not essentially, have held responsibility to define and manage the PCB layout process and standards for an organisation, including the component library management function.
  • Experience of Solidworks desirable.
