Firm power for the UK Emergency Services Network

Bladon MTGs are deployed at rural UK Emergency Services Network (ESN) sites by Mitie Telecom - supplying firm power where the grid is absent or too unreliable to meet ESN service-level requirements.

The challenge

The UK ESN gives police, fire, and ambulance services a single high-availability mobile comms network. Rural ESN sites - by definition the ones that matter most for emergency coverage - frequently sit beyond reliable grid power. Diesel gensets struggle on maintenance load and emissions compliance.

Mitie needed a power source it could deploy widely across rural sites, service annually, and rely on for the high-availability profile ESN requires.

The solution

Mitie standardised on the Bladon MTG12 for a programme of rural ESN sites. The MTG runs existing-supply liquid fuel, services once a year, and runs at low enough acoustic and emissions profiles to deploy in noise-sensitive rural locations without special mitigation.

Remote monitoring lets Mitie track unit health between service visits and dispatch only when there's something genuinely to investigate.

Sites are running reliably with the annual-service maintenance cadence the MTG was designed for. Mitie reports significantly lower truck-roll counts compared to the diesel equivalent - saving operational cost and reducing the carbon footprint of the maintenance activity itself.

The deployment is a reference point for other UK critical infrastructure programmes - particularly rural broadband and water utility backup - where similar operational constraints apply.
