Bladon was announced as the winner of the Vodafone Renewable Energy Challenge, selected from a competitive field of entrants from across the energy and telecommunications sectors. The Challenge was set up by Vodafone to identify and support start-ups and scale-ups whose technology could accelerate the transition to renewable and low-carbon energy across the operator's global footprint.

A technology built for remote and off-grid sites

The judging panel assessed entrants against criteria including technical readiness, environmental benefit and commercial viability. Bladon's microturbine generators were entered as a solution for remote and off-grid applications, where mains power is unreliable or unavailable and where operators have historically relied on diesel generators. Bladon's proposition centred on a small-scale turbine design intended to be cleaner, more efficient and more cost-effective to run than the diesel alternatives typically deployed at these sites, with fewer moving parts and reduced servicing requirements as a direct result of the turbine's construction.

For a telecommunications business such as Vodafone, off-grid and weak-grid sites represent a persistent operational and environmental challenge. Towers in remote locations often depend on generators that must be fuelled and maintained by road, sometimes over long distances and difficult terrain. Any technology that can reduce fuel consumption, cut the frequency of site visits and lower emissions at these locations has a direct bearing on both operating cost and progress towards decarbonisation targets, which was reflected in the Challenge's focus on start-ups working in this space.

What the win meant for Bladon
